Keep it for myself

It wouldn’t be a gift

Because you wouldn’t want it

This bundle of things I have for you

I have to keep to myself

You’d hand it back to me

And say that you were grateful

But the parcel wasn’t meant for you

I have to keep it for myself

You’d be polite about it

And sorry, and far too kind

Because you don’t want to hurt me

But I must keep it to myself

And so I hold it safe

Hoping that the day will come

When the gift will be a wanted thing

I won’t keep to myself

I wonder if it’s you I’ll give it to.
